Bite the dust
翻譯成“吃土”？可千萬別這麼理解，在地道美語中，它有兩層含義：
第一個含義：企業破產、機器失靈等。
可以從表面引申出來，當你已經需要bite the dust的時候，說明你的經濟情況也不太好；如果機器需要bite the dust，那機器肯定也老化、出故障了。
第二個含義：失敗、完蛋、死亡。（類似於網路用語“敗者食塵”）
這個含義來源於上世紀的西部電影，當牛仔被擊中從馬上掉下來，地面揚起的塵土塞了滿嘴，這也表明他輸了，失敗了。還有一種說法可以追溯到《荷馬史詩》，書中使用了bite the dust形容戰士死亡的慘狀。
例1：This machine bites the dust， it has been completely scrapped。
這部機器失靈了，它已經徹底報廢了。
例2：At the end of the movie， the protagonist bites the dust。
在電影結尾處，主角掛掉了。
那麼
吃土的英語怎麼說呢？
其實，“吃土”最為準確的譯法是
“live on dirt”
。

因此，就可以得出bite the bullet的真正意思：
To deal with a difficult situation which cannot be avoided對付一個無法避免的困難的境遇。
Bite the bullet 咬緊牙關、忍住困難做某事、硬著頭皮做某事
例：She had to bite the bullet and stay up late for the final exam。
為了期末考試，她不得不咬緊牙關背書。
Bite back = 咬回去？
Bite back 並不是字面意思“咬回去”，在劍橋英語詞典中，它有兩個含義，一是對於別人的言行攻擊做出報復，另一個是做出憤怒的迴應。
Bite back 對言語攻擊進行反擊、憤怒地迴應
例：Rather than bite back to rumors， people often find the right time to clarify
對於謠言，人們往往不會憤怒地迴應，而是找準時機澄清。
Bite your lip 不只是“咬嘴唇”
Lip ［lɪp］ 嘴唇
說到咬嘴唇，大家第一反應就是“bite your lip”，除了這個，它還有更地道的意思。
Bite your lip 一言不發
牛津英語詞典這麼解釋：
To stop yourself from saying something or from showing an emotion。
想象一下，把嘴唇咬住，要說話、表達情感就比較難了。因此也不難得出“一言不發、欲言又止”等含義。
例：The police asked 3 questions in a row， he bit his lip。
警察連續問了3個問題，他都一言不發。
