這個用法裡的“turn”並不是像現在一般指的“輪轉”，而是表示“

做好事

”。因此，這個表達背後的意思是，如果一個人做了一件好事，那麼就值得用另一個善行來回報這種善良。

這種幫助別人，然後得到幫助的想法比這個諺語出現得還要早。有很多寓言都是說的強壯的動物幫助弱小的動物，然後弱小的動物再幫助強壯的動物。就比如，獅子救出了一隻老鼠，老鼠後又咬破了抓住獅子的網，幫助獅子逃脫了獵人的追捕的寓言故事。
