情態動詞could用法詳解
詞典中解釋的could的用法。
（1）作為can的過去式，用在表達“有能力做某事”時的過去式。 I couldn’t eat more。
（2）詢問對方“我可以怎麼樣……”，一般是“Could I ……”或者“Could we ……”
（3）請求對方做某事來幫助自己，一般是“Could you ……”後接“help me？”、“come here instantly？”
（4）表示一種可能和猜測。It could rain tomorrow。 We could be late。
（5）表示建議。You could go there by bus。 We could try again。
（6）表示一種抱怨或者情緒，結果不應該是現在這個樣子。I could have been much rich。（我本來應該非常富有的！）
（7）強烈想做某事。I have been treated so badly that I could cry。
《哈利波特》中的例句解析
根據這些解釋，把《哈利波特》中出現的一些could例句，歸類到它們中來。

應該是can的過去式（1），不能夠忍受別人發現哈利波特一家。
What could he have been thinking of?
這句比較難理解，網上很多人問這句話到底什麼意思，怎麼翻譯。Could have been doing 表示虛擬語氣，與事實相反，意思是不應該做什麼（6）。而這句話又是問句，意思應該是“他剛才在想什麼呢？（反問的語氣）”，“他真不應該這麼想。”，“他剛才怎麼能這樣想呢？”這樣翻譯都可以。
Cats couldn't read maps or signs.
貓是讀不懂地圖或者標識牌的。這裡的could作為can的過去式（1）。
As he sat in the usual morning traffic jam, he couldn't help noticing that there seemed to be a lot of strangely dressed people about.
他像往常一樣被堵在早高峰的路上，不得不看著外面，發現很多著裝怪異的人們。這裡的couldn‘t help doing sth是常用搭配了，這裡的could是can的過去式（1）。
This bunch were whispering excitedly, too, and he couldn't see a single collecting tin.

”這句話也是比較令人費解的。本質是虛擬語氣包含了很多“言語外”的資訊。一整天？你不是應該在慶祝嗎？
結合上下文來理解。McGonagall教授說“你要是在石頭牆上站一整天，你也會僵硬”，然後Dumbledore回答說“一整天？你應該在慶祝啊？（怎麼會一整天都站在那裡呢？）”這句話表達了一種驚訝（6），她不應該站在牆上而是去上街慶祝。
Couldn't you do something about it?
你不能做點什麼嗎？
跟Could you help me？類似，一種請求對方做某事（3）。只是這裡是否定的形式。
Even if I could (do it), I wouldn’t (do it).
即使我能，我也不願意。這裡的could表示有很大可能性做某事（4）。would do sth表示一種主觀意願，could客觀上可以做某事/可能會做某事。例如，
I could do it， if you like。
如果你喜歡，我可以去做這件事。（但是我並不太情願。）
總結：
詞典裡給出了多達7個用法，如果這麼記的話，比較費力而且還容易弄錯。我自己總結的方法來記憶，感覺方便很多，在寫作中犯錯的機率可能會小很多。
（1）最簡單直接的意思，就是作為“can”能力解釋時（be able to）對應的過去式。
比如
I can run faster。
我能跑得更快些。如果要在過去式狀態下表達這個意思，就用could。
還有 “
You cannot do it！
”對應的就是“
You couldn’t do it！
”你不能這麼做。
（2）還有一大類用法就是表達一種建議、詢問能否做某事，這個“做”的主語無論是別人還是自己。
Could we go there by bus？（We could go there by bus。）
Could you do me a favor？
（你可以幫我個忙嗎？）
（3）就是表示一種可能性，有部分猜測的意思。
We could be late。
（我們可能要遲到了。）這裡和might意思相近。
I couldn‘t do it。
（我可能做不了。）比較下與下面兩句的區別。
I wouldn’t do it
。
（我不想做。）
I shouldn‘t do it。
（我不該做。）
（4）最後一類在一些fiction類的書中比較容易見到，就是
could + have done sth
。
它是專門的一大類——虛擬語氣，相對來說是比較難理解，不那麼直接，比如。
It is difficult enough， but it could have been worse。
（這件事已經夠艱難的了，但是本來可能會更糟糕呢。）
The worst part ot it is that I could have prevented the accident。
（最糟糕的是我本來可以阻止意外的發生。）
