1。 After reading an article ‘Cigarette Smoking and Your Health’， I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves。 讀完一篇題為《吸菸與健康》的文章之後，我點上了一支菸，來鎮定一下自己緊張的神經。

calm my nerves： 鎮定我的神經

2。 My friends kept on offering me cigarettes and cigars。They made no effort to hide their amusement whenever I produced a packet of sweets from my pocket。 我的朋友們不斷地向我遞香菸和雪茄。每當我從口袋裡掏出一包糖果時，他們都毫不掩飾地表現出他們對此感到非常好笑。

keep on doing： 持續不斷做某事

made no effort to hide： 毫不掩飾

a packet of sweets： 一包糖果

3。 When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette，it was more than I could bear。 當我的老朋友布賴恩極力勸我接受一支香菸時，我再也忍不住了。

urge sb。 to do sth。： 強烈要求某人做某事

more than I could bear： 無法忍受

4。 Anyway， as Brian pointed out，it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking。 He himself has done it lots of times！ 不管怎麼說，正如布賴恩指出的那樣，戒菸是世界上最容易的事情，他自己就已經戒了很多次了！

give up： 放棄

Special difficulties

1。 keep on： 持續做某事 My friends kept on offering me cigarettes。

2。 keep off： 不接近 Please keep off the grass。

3。 keep away from： 避開，遠離 He kept away from the party。

4。 keep up： 繼續努力 Good work！ Keep it up！

5。 keep up with： 跟上 He ran so fast， I could not keep up with him。

6。 keep out：留在外面 A big notice on the door said，‘Keep out！’
