come clean about 的結構有點奇怪，那麼怎麼理解才合理呢？

Come 是十大“魔鬼”動詞之一，那麼它的用法之豐富自然不在話下，它也是常見的不及物動詞之一；它大部分的用法是以不及物動詞的角色出現的，與小品詞構成了豐富多彩的短語動詞，是學習的一個重點。

在這些短語動詞當中，有的可以是及物短語動詞，如 come at，意為“撲向”等，come to，意“合計，供給”等，有些則仍然是不及物的，如 come on，意為“趕快”等，come up，意為“升起，發生“等，例如：

You can‘t come at a cat like that， or you’ll scare it off。

你不能那樣撲向貓，否則你會把它嚇跑的。

I never expected those few items to come to so much。

我根本沒想到就那麼幾件東西合計起來竟要這麼多錢。

We got up so early to watch the sun come up。

我們起得這麼早是為了看日出。

由此可見，come 不是透過小品詞，就是透過其他的介詞或副詞來與其他的成分聯絡起來，短語動詞只是 come 的其中一種用法，它還有其他一些固定的搭配，如 come to the point，意為“抓住要點”等，例如：

It seems what he says never comes to the point。

他說話好像從來不抓重點。

還有如 come to light，意為“真相大白，顯露”等，例如：

Who was behind the killing came to light。

誰是幕後兇手已經真相大白了。

Come to the point 和 come to light 中的 to 都是介詞，後面分別接名詞性成分 the point 和 light；然而有一些固定搭配就顯得不那麼自然，

很多人的眼裡是作形容詞或動詞，例如：

Would you please go down to my bedroom and bring me a clean shirt？

你能到我臥室給我拿件乾淨的襯衫嗎？

She often spends a lot of time cooking and cleaning。

她經常花很多時間做飯和打掃衛生。

然而有時 clean 也可以作副詞，不過一般限於非正式場合，這類的副詞通常被稱作扁平副詞（flat adverb），此時 clean 意為“徹底地，完整地”，例如：

I clean forgot about calling him。

我把給他打電話的事忘得一乾二淨。

而固定搭配 come clean about 中的 clean 就是一個副詞，修飾 come，其中 about 是介詞，整個短語意為“全盤招供，和盤托出”，例如：

Isn‘t it time the government came clean about their plans for education？

這難道不是政府徹底說明教育計劃的時候了嗎？

We have to come clean about what we did before Joe gets punished for our crime！

在喬因我們的罪行受到懲罰之前，我們必須坦白我們所做的一切！

類似於 come clean about 這種“動詞+副詞+介詞”的結構不少，比較常見的還有 look forward to，come down with 等，其中的 to 和 with 是介詞，那麼顧名思義後面要接名詞性成分，例如：

I think I’m coming down with flu。

我想我得了流感。

We look forward to strengthening close co-operation with you。

我們期待著與你們加強密切合作。
