A judge was working in his room one day when a neighbour ran in and said ， ‘If one man’s cow kills another‘s ， is the owner of the first cow responsible ？’

翻譯：一天，一位法官正在自己的房間裡工作，忽然他的一個鄰居闖了進來，並且說道：“假如一個人的牛頂死了別人的牛，那麼第一頭牛的主人是不是要對此負責？”

‘It depends ， ’ answered the judge 。

翻譯：“這得看情況而定，”法官回答。

‘Well ， said the man ， ’Your cow has killed mine 。‘

翻譯：“哦，”鄰居說：“你的牛把我的牛頂死了。”

’Oh ，‘ answered the judge 。 ’Everyone knows that a cow cannot think like a man ， so a cow is not responsible ， and that means that its owner is not responsible either 。‘

“啊，”法官回答說：“誰都知道牛不能向人一樣思考，所以牛沒有責任，並且就意味著牛的主人也沒有責任。”

’I am sorry ， Judge ，‘ said the man 。 ’I made a mistake 。 ‘I meant that my cow killed yours 。’

翻譯：“對不起法官，”這個男子說：“我說錯了，我是說我的牛頂死了你的牛。”

The judge thought for a few seconds and then said ， ‘When I think about it more carefully ， this case is not as easy as I thought at first 。’ And then he turned to his clerk an said ， ‘Please bring me that big black book from the shelf behind you 。’

翻譯：這位法官享樂一會兒，然後說：“我更加仔細地考慮了以下，這樁案子看來並不像我剛才考慮的那麼簡單。”於是他轉過身對秘書說：“請從你身後的書架上把那本黑色的大厚書拿給我。”
