Blush vs Flush的區別（容易混淆）

昨天看電影有這樣一個片段，男女二人對話

Lady：Do the women take everything off？

Gentleman： They have to leave little pasties on their……（別問我什麼是pasties……）

Lady： nipples？

Gentleman：yes， those。

Lady： and do they kick their legs up like this？

Gentleman： more or less

Lady： you’re blushing。

看到blush我心裡馬上想到了flush，兩個詞都有臉紅的意思，但二者有何區別？今天就說說這個問題。先看一下Collins字典中的解釋：

Blush：

When you

blush

， your face becomes redder than

usual

because you are

ashamed

or

embarrassed

。

Flush：if you flush， your face goes red because you are hot or ill， or because you are feeling a strong emotion such as embarrassment or anger。

兩個單詞中都說道“embarrassment（窘困）”這種感覺，這是二者含義的重疊之處。可該怎麼分辨為好呢？……

在異性面前害羞臉紅，一定用blush

Blush多用於某人因感到窘困或害羞（比如在心儀的異性面前）而產生的臉紅，特別是“在心儀的異性面前臉紅”，一定使用blush。

因疾病、悶熱或不明原因臉紅時，使用flush

Flush多用於某人因疾病、悶熱或外力作用導致的臉紅。這個詞並沒有“被有魅力的異性吸引”的含義，而在某人因為發燒臉紅時，則一定使用flush——這是兩個詞的重要區別。

如果在某人出醜陷入窘境時臉紅，則兩個詞都可以使用（我自己的感覺），而當一看到一個人面色潮紅，並不知適合原因是，我更傾向於使用flush。

我們再看看Collins中的例句：

Blush

1。 I blushed scarlet at my stupidity。

2。 “Hello， Maria，” he said， and she blushed again。

Flush：

1。 Do you sweat a lot or flush a lot？

2。 He turned away embarrassed， his face flushing red。 （這句話中的flush可以換成blush）

flush動詞還有“沖洗”的意思，這是為什麼……

此外，flush作為動詞的第二個含義是沖洗——如

flushed the toilet 。
