Give up the ghost：靈魂出竅

Give up和 the ghost都很常見。二者放到一起，難免硬想成“放棄鬼魂”。若果真這樣想，那麼像下面這樣的句子就怎麼也想不通。

【例句1】He finally gave up the ghost after a long illness。

【例句2】My poor old car finally gave up the ghost。

【例句3】Many people have given up the ghost and left the Party。

之所以出現“想不通”，那是因為give up the ghost是個很老的成語。

對這裡的ghost有兩點說明。

一，ghost的當代語義為“鬼； 鬼魂； 幽靈”， 聽起來很瘮人，但在古英語中也表達

soul， spirit。這就如同漢語的“魂”，有點嚇人，但是在“靈魂、

忠魂

”等詞語中，也是好字。

二、given up the ghost的the ghost是主語自己的ghost， 比如【例句1】中是主語he的ghost。

這樣在來看【例句1】， 其中的give up為“放棄”，也就是“釋放”。因而這裡的give up the ghost就是“釋放自己的靈魂”，這就是“死了”的語義。

因此give up the ghost的第一個

詞義就

是“死亡”。【例句1】的意思就是“在長時間病痛折磨後他最終去世了”。

後來，“人停止工作”轉義到“物停止工作”，所以【例句2】的意思是“我可憐的舊車終於完蛋了。”

可能give up本身有放棄的含義，而the ghost讓人有毛骨悚然的強調情景，所以give up the ghost也有“拋棄、放棄”含義，所以【例句3】的意思是“許多人已經放棄了，離開了黨。”

總結：give up the ghost有三個涵義：對人是“死亡”；對物“不能幹活”；“放棄”。究竟是哪個涵義，需要看語境。
