前兩天聽到有人用“You‘re a fast friend”來形容好友。
這是什麼意思，朋友很快？當然不是，fast friend是指忠實可靠的朋友。

那麼，fast friend這個說法是怎麼來的呢？
Although many believe that the idiom ’fast friends‘ means friends who developed a liking for one another quickly， the term is actually a shortened form of ’steadfast friends。‘
雖然很多人認為“fast friends”這個習語是指很快就喜歡上彼此的朋友，但這個說法實際上是“堅定的朋友”的縮寫形式。
The origin of the idiom ’fast friends‘ comes from an even older version of the word ’steadfast‘ – Old English triewe meaning faithful， trustworthy， and steady in adhering to promises or friends。
這個用法的起源來自“堅定不移”這個詞的古英語版——triewe這個詞，它的意思是忠實、值得信賴、對承諾或朋友堅定不移。
“熟詞偏義”是英語中常見的情況，其實fast除了我們熟悉的“快的”的意思之外，也有很多解釋。
