1. Survey, 是調查的意思。survey的基本意思是指從遠處或高處來看遠處的人或物,即“眺望,縱覽”,也可指對某事進行徹底、深入的觀察,或從全域性出發對形勢進行分析,以求得出結論,作出決策,即“鑑定”“審度”等。

該詞14世紀晚期進入英語，直接源自古法語的surveeir；最初源自中世紀拉丁語的supervidere，意為監督。

有些調查很正式，像民意調查、民意檢測等。比如說，“A comprehensive survey shows that support for suicide bombing against civilians has fallen sharply across the Muslim world since 2002，” 一項綜合調查發現，2002年以來，穆斯林世界對用自殺炸彈的方式襲擊平民的支援程度顯著下降。

有些調查卻十分輕鬆詼諧。比如說，你知道美國人和加拿大人給小費的時候誰更大方嗎？“A new survey finds that Canadians are tight-fisted about tipping，” 意思是最新調查顯示，加拿大人給小費的時候很摳門。

2. Survey還有測量;勘測;測繪的意思。

If someone carries out a survey of an area of land， they examine it and measure it， usually in order to make a map of it。

The scientists conducted two aerial surveys followed by two ground surveys。

科學家們在兩次地面勘測後又進行了兩次空中勘測。

Scarborough Council commissioned geological experts earlier this year to survey the cliffs。

Tips：inquiry, investigation, research, survey 這些名詞均有"調查"之意。

inquiry :

普通常用詞，指正式調查，也指一般的打聽或查詢。

investigation :

一般指有系統的調查以得到希望發現或需要知道的事。

research :

指科學工作者等為揭示自然規律或獲取某個領域的新知識而進行長時間的調查研究。

survey :

多指為寫書面報告而進行的民意測驗或調查。
