每日英語｜很多人說看不懂otherwise這個詞，你真的以為是「否則」嗎？
我們大多數時候並不覺得otherwise很難理解，就是「否則」，常見的用法如：
- We need to get there by 9：00，
otherwise
we‘ll miss the train。
- 我們要9點之前趕到，否則就趕不上列車了。
但是，很多小夥伴反映很多地方用「否則」去解釋根本說不通。
比如，
郵件一：
- Need to finalize product artwork，
otherwise
sketch is approved。
（artwork是指圖案，sketch是指草圖）
sketch到底approve了沒有了？
郵件二：
The preview file is attached。 The only issues that may change from here should be…
1。 。。。
2。 …。
3。 …
The general structure of the product is otherwise intact。
（intact是指未做更改的）
產品的結構到底改有沒有改動？
郵件三：
- I am not going to do it
otherwise
， unless I have missed something in my research。
到底是打算doing it還是不打算doing it？
再比如，下面這個影片裡，otherwise是什麼意思？
如果你理解了otherwise的本質意思，那一切都豁然開朗。
一個單詞有很多個意思，但都來自一個本質意思，你只要充分理解這個本質意思，所有的意思都一通百通。

otherwise的本質意思就是 not this one， but something else，很明顯就是從other衍生過來的，其後綴wise是表示「in a… way」以…方式，「in … respect」在…方面。
比如
likewise 類似的（in a “like” way）
clockwise 順時針的 （沿著鐘錶走動的方向）
stepwise 逐步的 （像階梯一樣的方式）
你自己也可以用wise創造新詞，這種做法很常見，表示「在…方面」
timewise 在時間方面（Timewise， we are OK 在時間方面，我們還很充足）
moneywise 在錢方面
marketwise 在市場方面
healthwise 在健康方面
我們再來看otherwise，就是在其他方面（other respect/other thing），即not this one but something else，就是指「除目前說的這個以外的其他…」，something else包羅永珍，指代任何你想指代的東西。
否則（if not）只是其中的一個意思，出現在是兩個對立的情況中，只有Yes和No，才會讓你覺得otherwise是「否則」的意思。如果在非對立的情況中，otherwise就是指除此之外的「其他情況」。
反正這是個萬能詞，可以指代任何方面，既可以是副詞，也可以是代詞。
比如
- Please follow my instructions。 Don’t do it
otherwise
（副詞，= don’t do it in a different way）。
- 請按照我的指示做，不要用別的方法做。
- Please stay at home。 Don‘t go
otherwise(
副詞，= don’t go somewhere else）。
- 請待在家裡，不要去別的地方。
- Please keep working and don‘t do
otherwise
（名詞，= don’t do something else）。
- 請專注工作，不要做別的事情。
- Nothing will change no matter if they win or
otherwise（
動詞， = or loose， tie）。
- 不管他們贏沒贏，都不會有什麼改變。
- I know you love her。 Don‘t pretend
otherwise
（ 副詞，= don’t pretend as if you didn‘t love her）。
- 我知道你喜歡她，別裝做沒事一樣。
- I wanted to see him but he was
otherwise
engaged（ 副詞，=he was engaged in something else）。
- 我想見他，但他在忙別的事。
有一個固定搭配是 or otherwise是指 「或者其他情況」，你可以從下面的例句看到otherwise的詞性是萬能的。
- I can’t see any advantage in changing my job - financially or
otherwise
。
- 我看不出換工作對我有什麼好處，財務上或者其他方面。
- We welcome any comments from viewers， favorable or
otherwise
。
- 我們歡迎任何評論，好評或者其他評論。
還有一個很重要的用法是和unless搭配，在法律文書或者說明文裡很常見，大家記住以下四個常見的表達：
unless otherwise provided 除非另有規定
unless otherwise agreed 除非另有約定
unless otherwise stated 除非另有說明
unless otherwise advised by a doctor 或遵醫囑（除非醫生另有指示）
例：
- Unless
otherwise provided
in this Agreement， either Party may terminate this Agreement at any time by giving the other Party thirty （30） days‘ advance written notice of termination。
- 除非本協議另有規定，任何一方可以提前終止合同，須提前30天以書面形式通知對方。
下面再介紹幾個老外原生例句。
我老闆以前給我們發過這樣一封郵件：
- I would believe this is the best way to go。 You are welcomed to persuade me
otherwise
。
這裡的otherwise當然也不是「否則」的意思，而是指 persuade me towards something else，也是「說服我這不是最好的辦法」。
下面這封郵件，如果你把otherwise當做「否則」來解釋，就會覺得很強硬。
- I saw a few emails from you both。 I’ve been out of office last few days because I’ve been sick。 If you need anything urgently， please Wechat me。
Otherwise
I’ll respond to your other emails when I go back to the office on Monday。
實際上，otherwise就是指if there is no this kind of situation ，細細品味。
回到文章開頭的例子：
- Need to finalize product artwork，
otherwise
sketch is approved（= in other respect）。
- 需要最終確定圖案，除此之外，草圖已經確定好了（other respect指sketch）。
- （。。。） The general structure of the product is
otherwise
intact（= in other respect）。
- 除了以上幾點有改動外，整體結構沒有做改動（other respect指general structure）。
- I am not going to do it
otherwise,
unless I have missed something in my research（= do it in other way）。
- 我不打算改動我目前的方法，除非我遺漏什麼東西。
- The twins come from a large and
otherwise
physically unremarkable family（=in other respect。
- 這對雙胞胎來自一個除了大之外，體貌很普通的家庭（other respect指除了large這一點remarkable外，體貌方面unremarkable）。
