bite one’s tongue字面意思是“咬到舌頭”，這是無疑的。
但在生活裡，它的引申含義才是我們更常用的。
bite one‘s tongue通常指不讓自己對別人說某些可能不適當的、傷感情的甚至冒犯人的話。
He would be wise to bite his tongue。
他會明智地保持緘默。
I wanted to argue， but I had to bite my tongue。
我想據理力爭，但我不得不強忍不說。
You’d better bite your tongue and say nothing。
你最好保持沉默，什麼也不說。
She was dying to say something sarcastic to him， but bit her tongue and stayed silent。
她很想對諷刺他幾句，但她忍住沒說，保持著沉默。
hold one's tongue
hold one‘s tongue和bite one’s tongue意思相近，表示的是“忍住不開口”：
I reckon you‘ve just got to learn to hold your tongue。
我想你得學會保持緘默。
Oh， if inly I hadn’t said that， if only I had held my tongue。
唉，要是我沒說那句話，我要是保持沉默就好了。
但情緒激動時，忍住不好的話，用bite one's tongue會更貼切。
hold your tongue
告訴對方我們不想聽他們的話，叫他們“閉嘴，不要亂說話”，常在祈使句中：
She tried to talk him into letting her go， but he ordered her sharply to hold her tongue。
她試圖說服他放她走，但他嚴厲地命令她閉嘴。

bite your tongue也可以這樣用，但
現在hold your tongue更為常用
。
總之，
當你想讓別人閉嘴，不要再說了的時候，也可以不那麼粗暴地說，“Shut up!”；而可以說：“hold your tongue!”或者“Bite your tongue！”。
