一、能否作前置定語
Afraid 不能作前置定語，而 scared 和 frightened 可以，這是它們最主要的區別之一，例如：

二、能否接動詞不定式
Afraid 和 scared 後面常接動詞不定式，而 frightened 不常用，例如：

當這些詞與 of 連用時，通常表示一直經歷的一種心理狀態，例如：

而當與 by 連用時，通常表示產生結果的某個突發事件，例如：

四、是否是分詞形容詞
Afraid 之所以不同的另外一個原因是，它不是分詞形容詞，而 scared 和 frightened，類似的還有 terrified，horrified，petrified 和 spooked 等是分詞形容詞，它們都是對應動詞的過去分詞，也就是我們常說的以 -ed 結尾的。
1。 通常過去分詞（以 -ed 結尾）用來談論某人的感受，例如：
He is always frightened by ghost stories。
他總是被鬼故事嚇壞。
Sally is terrified of cockroaches。
莎莉害怕蟑螂。
I am scared to talk loudly in public。
