自我介紹時不要只說“my name is .....”

Hello everyone, I will start a series of video called “Know Your Audience。” In English, like in every language, there are different ways of speaking for different social situations。 Speaking English for a test, can be different than speaking English with a friend or your boss, and it is important to know the differences。

For the first episode we will talk about introducing oneself。 When you are interviewing for a job, or applying for school, it is common for you to start by introducing yourself。 Knowing what to say about yourself depends on who you are talking about。 So now let’s start!。 We will look at three different styles:for casual conversations, for business meetings, and for school applications。

Style 1: Casual (

name, origin, personal history, interests, friendly suggestions)

If you are meeting someone who might become a close friend or romantic friend, being friendly, open, and intimate is a good place to start。

Example:

My name is Jacob, but you can call me Jake。 I’m Canadian, but I prefer calling myself a citizen of the world。 After all, I have lived abroad for many years, and I call people from all over the world my friends。 I really like international movies, and often watch them with my friends in a local theatre。 If you have time, maybe we can go see one together sometime。

Style 2: Business (

professional background, professional expertise, relevant personal history, family)

If you are meeting a future employer or selling yourself to a client, it is important to be courteous, and also focus on your professional experience, and expertise in your introduction。

Example:

My name is Jacob Gerow。 I have been working as a foreign teacher in China for some time now, and I plan to continue this profession in the future, possibly in another country。 I am Canadian and therefore have a strong grasp of both English and French。 I also understand the importance of cross-cultural communications。

Style 3: School application

(mixing a bit of personal and profession/education background)

When applying for college or high school abroad, interviewers want to see a person with an interesting, personal and educational background, which can show a well-rounded, healthy and successful person。 For this mixing the casual and business style together is the best technique。

Example:

My name is Jacob Gerow。 I am 23 years old, and I am a college graduate from McGill University in Canada。 I have a bachelor’s degree with double major in East Asian Studies and International Development。 In the future I hope to continue further studies in International Relations, or Business。

As a kid, growing up in a bilingual family, my mother is French speaking, and my father is English speaking, I have always been interested in crossing cultural boundaries。
