在英語裡，至少有四個單詞表示跟國家相關的概念：country / state / nation/land

它們有什麼不一樣呢？

country 指國家時，普通用詞，側重國土與人民。

比如：

European countries

歐洲國家

It‘s good to meet people from different parts of the country 。

結識來自這個國家不同地區的人是有益的。

The country’s economic plight is strangling its scientific institutions。

該國的經濟困境阻礙了其科研機構的工作進展。

nation指國家時，普通用詞，指在某一國土定居的人民、民族，強調人民，側重民族、國民（總稱）

。比如：

The entire nation， it seemed， was watching TV。

好像全國的人都在看電視。

An independent nation

獨立的國家

state指國家時，正式用詞，指政治概念上的國家，即由政府所代表的國家。側重政體、政府

European Union member states

歐盟成員國

They wish to limit the power of the State。

他們希望限制政府權力。

land

常用於文學中，側重國土，帶感情色彩。

比如：

She longed to return to her native land。

她渴望回到她的祖國。

They dreamed of travelling to foreign lands。

他們夢想去外國旅遊。

The fires are likely to permanently deforest the land。

這些火災很可能會徹底毀掉這片土地上的森林。
