聖誕節快樂~聖誕節知識知多少？開啟今日歡樂！
每年公曆的12月25日是聖誕節（Christmas Day），而前一天（12月24日）的晚上，不是聖誕節，而是“平安夜”，英文叫：Christmas Eve，eve 就是“前夕、前夜”的意思。對於西方國家的人而言，過聖誕就是他們的“過年”了；對信仰基督的人而言，這是他們一年中最重要的日子，是紀念主耶穌誕生的日子；而對於沒有宗教信仰的中國人而言，也喜歡過聖誕節，因為大街小巷濃厚的聖誕氛圍，會讓大家覺得很開心。
作為一個英語學習者，過聖誕的正確姿勢，就是了解和掌握以下跟“聖誕節”有關的概念：
聖誕節 Christmas
其實 Christmas 是由兩個部分構成的：Christ 和 mas。Christ指“基督”，而 mas源自於Mass，即“彌撒”。所以“聖誕節（Christmas）就是“基督彌撒”的意思，以紀念耶穌的降生。
“彌撒”是天主教的一種儀式，非常正規，有一套十分嚴謹的流程，包括聖歌、讀經、講道。這種儀式在基督教裡，叫“禮拜”，但不如“彌撒”這麼講究儀式。基督教裡的“禮拜”注重的是祈禱和講道。
“做禮拜”在英語中沒有特定的詞，一般就是 go to the church，或則叫 to worship。
Xmas
Xmas 這個詞是在聖誕節期間，大家在英文的郵件、印刷品、報紙標題中看到的一個詞。Xmas 實際上是 Christmas 的縮寫，X 是 Christ的諧音，Xmas 要比Christmas更簡潔。因此，在一些須要節省篇幅的地方，Xmas 比 Christmas 更有優勢。
其實 Xmas 這個詞可以追溯到1100年，當時，X就一直用來代表Christ（基督）。當時Christianity（基督教），可以寫成Xianity。還有一說，認為Xmas中的X出自Christ的希臘語對應詞的首字母——X，這就使得一些人認為這裡的X象徵十字架。
但大家請注意，Xmas是非正規用語，在正式場合，還是應該寫成 Christmas。
聖誕老人 Santa Claus
關於聖誕老人的說法，有兩種：英國人的說法為 Christmas Father，美國人的說法為 Santa Claus。
英國人的說法我們很好理解，那麼美國人的 Santa Claus是怎麼來的？其實，聖誕老人的形象來自於一位歐洲的主教，叫“St。 Nicholas”——聖·尼古拉斯（這裡 St。的全稱為 Saint，就是信奉基督的“聖徒”之意），相傳他一生做了很多善事，總是悄悄地幫助村子裡的窮人。
St。 Nicholas在荷蘭語中的發音為“Sinterklaas”，可能是某個荷蘭人把聖·尼古拉斯的故事帶到美國，根據美音中的發音規律，慢慢就演化出了“Santa Claus”這個家喻戶曉的名字。
聖誕樹 Christmas tree
根據最靠譜的記錄，聖誕樹（Christmas tree）起源於德國，後在世界範圍內流行起來。裝點聖誕樹成為慶祝聖誕節最有名的傳統之一。
據說德國的傳教士尼古斯在8世紀用“樅樹”（即冷杉樹）供奉聖嬰。
隨後，德國人把12月24日作為亞當和夏娃的節日，在家放上象徵“伊甸園”（Garden of Eden）的“樂園樹”，在上面掛上代表“聖餅”的小甜餅，象徵“贖罪”（atonement），還點上蠟燭（candle），掛上金屬片（tinsel），以慶祝耶穌的降生為人們奪回樂園。
到了16世紀，德國的宗教改革者馬丁·路德（Martin Luther）在樅樹上放置點燃的蠟燭，使它看起來像引導人們到伯利恆的星光。後來人們用聖誕樹上的電燈泡代替蠟燭。（《聖經》記載了東方的三位博士，依靠天上的星光，找到了在伯利恆一個馬廄裡出生的小耶穌。）
薑餅 Gingerbread
“薑餅”的單詞叫 Gingerbread，它是一個合成詞。雖然該詞裡面有bread（麵包），但跟鬆軟的麵包沒啥關係，口感上偏向於硬硬的餅乾。
在歐洲中世紀十字軍東征（Crusade）的時候，“姜（ginger）”是一種名貴的香料。把姜做到小糕點、小餅乾裡去，既能增加風味，又有驅寒的功效。但當時的人們只捨得在聖誕節這樣重要的節慶中使用。久而久之，薑餅便成了與聖誕節掛鉤的點心。
在被賦予了節日的含義之後，薑餅便被有創意的人們做成了各式各樣的的形狀，有小人兒、小動物、星星、柺杖、手套、風車、聖誕帽、聖誕樹形象等等，甚至還能做成複雜的“薑餅屋（Gingerbread House）”。
聖誕襪 Christmas Stocking
首先區別一下stocking 和 sock。sock指“短襪”，而 stockings 指“長筒襪”。聖誕襪一般就是像上圖這樣的長筒襪。
每年平安夜時，西方的父母都會在他們孩子的床頭放一隻 Christmas Stocking，告訴他們聖誕老人會往裡裝禮物。第二天起床的時候，孩子們就會在聖誕襪裡找到禮物，這也是他們最開心、幸福的一刻。
雖然孩子長大後知道並沒有什麼聖誕老人，但這樣美好的習俗就這樣一代代地傳承下來了。
聖誕快樂 Merry Christmas
很多人可能會有疑問，為什麼“聖誕快樂”要用 Merry Christmas，而不是 Happy Christmas 呢？
其實，在英國、愛爾蘭地區，Happy Christmas 和 Merry Christmas 都有人用，只不過美國人都會用 Merry Christmas，使這樣的表達更為常見。
merry 這個詞在英文中的含義一直是 pleasant（愉悅的），但1843年狄更斯的作品——《聖誕頌歌》（A Christmas Carol），讓merry具備了“（因喝酒而）微醉”的意思。比如英文中就有名言：Eat， drink and be merry， for tomorrow we die。 這句話的含義是“吃吧、喝吧、放縱吧，明天我們都會死”，實際上就是“人生苦短、及時行樂”。我個人覺得 Merry Christmas 的祝福更能代表大家勞累一年，想在聖誕節期間放鬆一下的心情。
因 Merry Christmas 這樣的說法帶有“放縱”的含義，這一點引起了包括伊麗莎白二世在內的部分人的不滿，以至於有些人還是堅持用 Happy Christmas。比如哈利波特系列電影的第三集，赫敏就對哈利說 Happy Christmas
