What‘s the difference between these two words？

If you’re learning English， words like this might seem a little confusing or maybe even frustrating。

這兩個單詞之間有什麼區別呢？

如果你正在學習英語的話，這種單詞可能看起來有點點令人困惑，甚至是令人垂頭喪氣。

I‘m Emma from mmmEnglish and today I’m going to explain the difference between ‘other’ and ‘another’ and show you how to use each of those words correctly。

Well I‘m ready to get started， are you？

我是Emma，歡迎來到Emma的美味英語，今天呢我要給大家解釋一下‘other’和‘another’的區別，帶領大家看一下如何正確地使用這兩個單詞。好的，我已經蓄勢待發了，你們呢？

他住在另一邊。他住在另一邊。

He lives on another side。 Are they really that different？

它們之間真的有那麼不同嗎？它們真的非常相似，那就是它們為什麼複雜的原因，但是它們並不是完全相同的。

They’re definitely similar and that‘s what’s tricky about them but they‘re not the same。

Let’s talk about the meaning of these two words first。

讓我們先來討論這兩個單詞的意思吧。‘Other’的意思是另外的或者是額外的。

‘Other’ can mean additional or extra。 What other countries has he travelled to besides France？

除了法國之外，他還去過什麼其他的國家呢？我知道他去過法國，但是除了法國之外，他還去過哪裡呢？

So I know that he‘s travelled to France but what additional countries has he travelled to other than France or apart from France？

Now another can also mean additional or extra。

‘another’也有額外的意思。但並不完全一樣。

But it’s not exactly the same。 We use ‘another’ to say one more。

我們會使用‘another’來說另一個。如果你餓了的話，還有一個三明治。

There‘s another sandwich if you’re hungry。

So that means， well you‘ve already had a sandwich but now I’m offering you more。

所以那就意味著，你已經有了三明治，但是我現在在給你另外一個。

所以‘other’和‘another’都可以意味著另外的或者是額外的，但是它們還都可以指不同的或者是替代的。

So both ‘other’ and ‘another’ can mean additional or extra but they can also both mean different or alternative。 I can ask：

我可以問：你有其他型別的果汁嗎？

Do you have any other types of juice？

So I don‘t want that type of juice， I want to know if there are alternatives， other types of juice， different ones from the juice that I’ve been offered。

所以我並不想要那種果汁，我想要知道是不是有替代的，其他型別的果汁，和我有的果汁不同的。‘another’和‘other’很相似，但是並不完全相同。

Now ‘another’ is similar to ‘other’ but it‘s not exactly the same。

There’s so much traffic。 Is there another way to go？

這裡太堵了。有其他的路可以走嗎？所以我想知道是不是有其他的路可以到達我的目的地？

So I want to know is there an alternative way to get to my destination？

Is there a different route that I can take？

有沒有不同的路線我可以走呢？同樣的，使用‘another’意味著另外一個，但是你注意到了它們的使用方式了嗎，每個單詞的句式是有些許不同的。

So again， using ‘another’ means one more but did you notice that the way they‘re used， the structure of the sentences can be a little different for each word。

It’s not always possible to simply swap one for the other， you know。

並不總是可以相互替換，大家懂的。你不能就單單把它倆給交換一下。

You can‘t just switch them。 So in a moment， we’re going to take a closer look at why that is。

等一下，我們要仔細看一下為什麼會是這樣。‘other’和‘another’都可以用作限定詞。

Both ‘other’ and ‘another’ can be used as determinants。 Now if you can‘t remember exactly what a determiner is， well that’s okay。

It‘s a type of word that introduces a noun and it makes it clear what we’re talking about。

如果你們不記得什麼是限定詞的話，沒事。這是一種能夠引出名詞的單詞，它會使我們所討論的事物更加清晰。我們所有人，餅乾，每個人，另外一份工作，另外一個朋友。

All of us， the cookie， each person， the other job， another friend。 Now notice how ‘other’ is used here。

注意一下這裡的‘other’是如何使用的。它是跟在‘the’後面或者是表示所有的單詞後面的，比如說‘他的另外一份工作’，後面跟著的是單數或者複數名詞。

We use it after ‘the’ or a possessive word like ‘his other job’ then followed by a singular or plural noun。

So can you think of some of your own examples like this？

The other lesson。 Most of the time ‘other’ is used with uncountable nouns and plural countable nouns。

大多數時候呢，‘other’都是和不可數名詞和複數可數名詞一起用的。你有其他的訊息要告訴我嗎？

Do you have any other information for me？ So here ‘other’ is a determiner for information。

這裡呢‘other’是‘information’的限定詞。‘information’是不可數名詞。

‘Information’ is an uncountable noun。 Do you know any other good books by this author？

你知道這位作者寫的其他的好書嗎？‘other’是限定‘書’是的，這是一個複數可數名詞。

So ‘other’ is determining ‘books’， a plural countable noun。 Got it so far？

到目前為止理解了嗎？那單數名詞，比如說：他的另外一份工作呢？

But what about if the noun was singular like： his other job？

So ‘other’ can be used with singular countable nouns that it needs another determiner， usually an article or a pronoun。

所以說呢，‘other’可以和單數可數名詞連用，它需要另一個限定詞，一般都是冠詞或者是代詞。你不能說“我喜歡另一條狗”。

So you can‘t say “I don’t like other dog”。 You need to say： “I don‘t like her other dog” or “the other dog”。

你需要說：“我不喜歡她的另一條狗”，或者是“另一條狗”。我們還可以使用單數單詞“an”。

We can use the single article ’an‘ as well。 Another， an another dog。

另外一個，另外一隻狗。當名詞是單數而且可數的時候，你可以使用“another”作為限定詞。

So when the noun is singular and countable， you can use ’another‘ as the determiner。

One of the sandwiches has cheese， the other sandwich doesn’t。

其中一個三明治有芝士，另外一個三明治沒有。注意這裡的冠詞‘the’，在‘other’之前。

Notice the article ‘the’ here， before ‘other’。

This makes it possible to use ‘other’ with singular countable nouns and this happens in really specific situations。

這就可以將‘other’和單數可數名詞連用，但是這隻出現在特定的情形中。

當你在談論兩件事物或者是兩個人的第二個事物或者是第二個人的時候，你就可以使用‘the other’。

You can use ‘the other’ when you‘re talking about two things or people and you want to talk about the second thing or person。

The first sandwich has cheese， the second or the other doesn’t。

第一個三明治有芝士，但是第二個或者是另一個沒有。她一隻手腕上戴著手鍊，另一隻手腕上戴著手錶。

She has a bracelet on one wrist and on the other she wears a watch。

So she has two wrists， the first has a bracelet and the second has a watch。

她有兩個手腕，第一個是手鍊，第二個是戴著手錶。我不能只是說：

I can‘t just say： “On the other wrist she wears a watch”， right？

“她另一個手腕上戴著手錶”，對吧？因為意思並不完整，我會讓聽眾們疑問：那第一隻手腕上戴著什麼呢？

Because the idea is incomplete， I would really leave the listener asking a question like： what was on the first wrist then？

’Another‘ is also used as a determiner so it can be used with singular countable nouns。

‘另外一個’也是一個限定詞，所以它可以和單數可數名詞連用。你還有另外一個空房間嗎？

Do you have another room available？ So here ’another‘ is the determiner to the singular countable noun， ’room‘。

這裡呢‘another’是單數可數名詞‘房間’的限定詞。我不能將‘another’和複數形式連用，我不能將‘another’和‘rooms’放到一起。

I can’t use ‘another’ with the plural form， I can‘t use ’another‘ with ’rooms‘。

If I want to ask if there are extra rooms available， more than one room， I need to use ’other‘ instead， okay？

如果我想要問是不是還有空房間的話，不只是一個房間，我需要使用‘other’，對吧？你還有其他的空房間嗎？

Do you have other rooms available？ Or do you have another room available？

或者是你有另外一個空房間嗎？但是這條規則是有例外的。

There is one exception to this rule though。

’Another‘ can be used with a determiner with plural nouns when a plural noun has a number or a number phrase in front of it like ’a few‘ or ’a couple‘。

‘another’可以和限定詞以及複數名詞連用，當複數名詞之前有數量或者是數量短語的時候，比如說‘一些’。我不能說‘我還需要幾周的時間完成這個報告’，因為‘weeks’是複數，而且是可數的。

I can’t say “I need another weeks to finish the report” because ‘weeks’ is plural and it‘s countable。

But I can say “I need another two weeks to finish the report” or “I need another couple of weeks to finish the report”。

但是我可以說‘我需要另外兩週完成這個報告’或者是‘我需要額外的幾周來完成這個報告’。懂了嗎？

Got it？ Now the other way to use these words is to use them as pronouns。

So again， ’another‘ can only be used with singular countable nouns。

好的，另外一種使用這些詞彙的方式是當做代詞使用。同樣的，‘again’只能和單數可數名詞連用。我要點杯飲料。你想要一杯嗎？

I’m going to order a drink。 Would you like another？

So in this sentence ‘another’ is replacing the noun ‘drink’ but remember， I can only use ‘another’ here because we‘re talking about a singular drink not multiple drinks。

在這個句子中，‘another’代替的是名詞‘飲料’，但是要記住哦，這裡我只能使用‘another’，因為我們討論的是單數的飲料，而不是複數的飲料。你猜怎麼回事？這裡沒有任何例外。

And guess what？ There aren’t any exceptions here。 ‘Another’ is just used as a singular pronoun。

‘Another’只能當成單數代詞使用。你會看到‘other’也可以當做代詞使用。

Now you‘ll see ’other‘ used as a pronoun too。

You can use it when you’re talking about two things and the first thing has already been mentioned。

當你談論兩件事物，第一件事物已經被提到過的時候，你就可以使用。比如說，我的第一個願望是去阿拉斯加。

So for example。 My first wish is to go to Alaska。 The other is to see the Northern Lights。

另外一個是去看極光。所以呢‘other’這裡是當做名詞使用，它作為一個代詞代替‘wish’。

So ‘other’ is acting as a noun here， it‘s a pronoun replacing ’wish‘。 And it’s okay to do this because it‘s clear what we’re talking about， we already mentioned that the first wish was I want to go to Alaska so when we use the ‘other’， we‘re obviously referring to ’wish‘ but there is something that you need to keep in mind。

這樣是可以的，因為很清楚我們在談論什麼，我們已經提到了第一個願望是我想去阿拉斯加，所以當我們使用‘other’的時候，我們很明顯指的是‘願望’，但是這裡有些注意點，你們要牢記於心。作為一個代詞，‘other’可以是單數，也可以是複數。

As a pronoun， ’other‘ can be singular or plural。

Now remember when I was talking about ’other‘ as a determiner， I said it can’t be plural。

記住哦，當我說‘other’作為限定詞使用的時候，我說過它不能是複數的。

但是你可以看到作為代詞使用的時候，它是複數形式。

But you will see a plural form and that‘s when it’s used as a pronoun。

So let‘s look at a couple of examples。

讓我們看看幾個例子吧。這個團隊的一部分人已經到達了。

Part of the group has already arrived。 The others will be here very soon。

另外的人很快就要到了。今天我們嘗試了三道傳統食物。

Today we tried three traditional foods。 Tomorrow we’ll try three others。

So we know that the word has to replace the noun ’movie‘， right？

Meaning an additional or a different movie。

So we need to choose a pronoun for a singular countable noun， it must be ’another‘。

所以我們需要選擇一個能夠代替單數可數名詞的代詞，那肯定是‘another’。這裡有沒肉的菜嗎？

Are there any dishes without meat？ So check out the noun here， it’s plural， ‘dishes’。

檢查一下這裡的名詞，是複數的‘dishes’。我們不能將‘any’和‘another’連用，對吧？所以這裡‘other’才是正確的答案。

And we can‘t say ’any‘ with ’another‘ right？ So ’other‘ is the correct answer。 Do you accept ’_ type of payment besides cash？

你接受除了現金之外其他的支付方式嗎？‘Another’是正確的，但是如果是‘types’，也就是複數呢？

‘Another’ is right but what if it was ‘types’—plural？ Then it would be ‘other’。

那就應該是‘other’。我需要再買個手機充電器，我自己的給丟了~

I need to buy ‘ phone charger， I lost mine！ So it’s a singular countable noun。

這是個單數可數名詞。那就必須是‘another’。

So it must be ‘another’。 I don‘t like oysters， but I love ’_ kinds of seafood。

我不喜歡牡蠣，但是我喜歡其他的海鮮。我們這裡是複數可數名詞，所以我們需要使用‘other’。

We have a plural countable noun here so we need to use ‘other’。 Awesome！ How did you go？
