1。 表示“頭髮”或“毛髮”的總稱，是集合名詞，不可數。如：
Birds have feathers， not hair。 鳥有羽毛，而沒有頭髮。

即使是表示部分頭髮，若意義泛指，仍不可數。如：

但是，若表示一根或多根“頭髮”或“毛髮”，則是個體名詞，可數。如：
The police found two hairs there。 警察在那兒找到了兩根頭髮。
There’s a hair in my soup。
我的湯裡有根毛。
The rug was covered with cat hairs。
地毯上淨是貓毛。
It‘s only a hair off a bull’s back to them。
這對他們來說，不過九牛一毛。

下面一句中的第一個hair表總稱（不可數），第二個hair為個體名詞（可數）：
Her hair is black。 Whenever she finds a grey hair she pulls it out。 她的頭髮是黑的，她只要發現有一根白髮就將它拔掉。
I get some grey hairs but I pull them out。
我有幾根白髮，但我都拔掉了。
2。 hair 與動詞 have 或 wear 搭配，含義稍有不同：用 have表示“有……頭髮”，用 wear 表示“留（做）……髮型”。如：
He has black hair。
他一頭烏髮。
He has golden hair。 他有一頭金髮。
John wears his hair very long。 約翰留著很長的頭髮。
3。 下面兩句均含有“理髮”之意，但含義不同。如：
I shall cut my hair。 我將理髮（自己給自己理髮）。
I shall have my hair cut。 我將理髮（請別人給我理髮）。
4。 與 beard（鬍鬚）用法不同：一個人的鬍鬚是 a beard，多個人的鬍鬚是 beards，但不管是一個人還是幾個人的頭髮卻都是 hair。如：
These old men have long beards。 這些老人都有很長的鬍鬚。
These young men wear long hair。 這些年輕人留長髮。
