六一兒童節|紀伯倫：《論孩子》（On Children）

兒童節快樂

今天六一兒童節，分享一首紀伯倫的詩《On Children》（致孩子）。孩子經由父母來到世上，從他們降生前我們就開始期許，孩子是我們的孩子，可也不是我們的孩子，因為他們有獨立的靈魂，和我們無法觸及的未來。

一個懷中抱著孩子的婦人說：

和我們說說孩子吧。

紀伯倫回答道：

Your children are not your children。

你的孩子，並不是你的孩子。

They are the sons and daughters of Life‘s longing for itself。

他們是生命對於自身渴望而誕生的孩子。

They come through you

他們藉助你來到這個世界，

but not from you，

卻並非因你而來，

And though they are with you，

他們陪伴你，

yet they belong not to you。

卻並不屬於你。

You may give them your love

你可以給予他們愛，

but not your thoughts，

卻不能給予他們思想，

For they have their own thoughts。

因為他們有自己的思想。

You may house their bodies

你可以庇護他們的身體，

but not their souls，

卻不能庇護他們的靈魂，

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow，

因為他們的靈魂屬於明天，

which you cannot visit， not even in your dreams。

屬於你在夢境中也無法達到的明天。

You may strive to be like them，

你可以拼盡全力，變得像他們一樣，

but seek not to make them like you，

卻不要讓他們變得和你一樣，

For life goes not backward

因為生命不會倒退，

nor tarries with yesterday。

也不可能在過去停留。

You are the bows

你是弓，

from which your children as living arrows are sent forth。

你的孩子是弦上即將發出的生命箭矢。

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite，

弓箭手遙望未來之路上的箭靶，

and he bends you with his might

用盡力氣將你拉開，

that his arrows may go swift and far。

使箭射得又快又遠。

Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness，

你們懷著愉悅的心情，在弓箭手的手中彎曲吧，

For even as he loves the arrow that flies，

因為他愛一路飛翔的箭，

so he loves also the bow that is stable。

也愛無比穩定的弓。
