端午節

農曆五月初五為“端午節”。為了紀念楚國愛國詩人屈原，這一天必不可少的活動就是吃粽子，賽龍舟。

據《史記》記載，屈原是戰國時期楚國大臣。他倡導舉賢授能，富國強兵，力主聯齊抗秦，遭到貴族們的強烈反對，後遭詆譭流放。公元前278年，秦軍攻破楚國京都。屈原聽到噩耗後，萬念俱灰，於5月5日投汨羅江而亡。

傳說屈原故去後，楚國百姓紛紛湧到汨羅江邊去憑弔屈原。漁夫們划起船隻，奮力打撈他的屍體。人們還將飯糰和雞蛋丟進江裡，以免屈原的身體被魚，蝦，蟹傷害。後來，怕飯糰被蛟龍所食，人們想出用竹葉包飯，外纏彩絲，這就是傳說中的粽子的來源。

Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth Lunar Calendar。It is the festival to

commemorate

Qu Yuan， a

patriotic

poet of Chu State。 Chinese have the tradition of eating Zongzi （ dumpling made of glutinous rice） ， and having dragon boat race on that day。

According to Historical Records， Qu Yuan was a

minister

of the Chu State

during the period of Warring States.

He

advocated

selecting government functionaries by their

competence,

making the state and army strong and

allying with

Qi State to fight against Qin。 However， his proposals were strongly opposed by Chu‘s

aristocrats.

Later Qu Yuan was

framed and set to exile

。 In 278 BC， Qin’s army fought and captured the capital of Chu。 Hearing the

devastating

news， Qu Yuan was totally

disillusioned

， and he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth Lunar month。

It was said that

upon hearing

the death of Qu Yuan， local people in the Chu State rushed to the riverside

to show their respect for

him。 Fishermen rowed on the river， trying hard to retrieve his body。 They threw rice balls and eggs into the water， hoping to keep fish ，shrimps， and crabs away from his body。 To prevent the giant dragon from eating the rice balls， local people came up with the idea of wrapping the rice with bamboo leaves ， with threads tied up outside， which， explains how zongzi was come into being
