若能永生，你會如何計劃你的未來？

今天看格列佛遊記時看到，主人公格列佛去了一個島叫Luggnuggian

，這個島上，Struldbrug人

（虛構的永不死亡的人物）

是長生不死的，如果一個Struldbrug的嬰兒出生時左眼上有一個圓點，而且這點沒有消失，那就是一個Struldbrug人。

原文：

If a Luggnuggian baby is born with a round spot above its left eye， which never disappears， it’s a Struldbrug。 ‘Well， a Struldbrug is a human being who will never die， but will live for ever。

隨後格列佛相當激動，幻想了很多場景，如Struldbrug人是特別幸運的！疾病、災難和死亡是永遠不會發生在他們身上的！想象下我們能從他們身上學到多少東西，我想他們是國家中最重要的人。他們經歷多少歷史，知道許多的事情，他們肯定會把這些知識傳給我們其他人。如果我有機會的話，我願意花費一生的時間在Luggnuggian去傾聽這樣傑出的人才的對話。

隨後Luggnuggian人表達了他能在這長呆表示很高興，隨後問他，若他是Struldbrug 人的話該如何計劃他的生活？

格列佛這樣回答：

‘That’s easy，’ I replied。 ‘First I’d work hard， and earn a lot of money。 In about two hundred years I’d be the richest man in Luggnagg。 I’d study too， so that I knew more about everything than the cleverest professors。 I’d also write down everything important that happened over the years， so that students of history would come to me for help。 I’d teach young people what I had learnt。 But most of my time I’d spend with other Struldbrugs， friends of mine。 Together we could help to destroy crime in the world， and begin to build a new and better life for everyone。’ But most of my time I’d spend with other Struldbrugs， friends of mine。

就不逐句翻譯了，大概意思就是先努力工作200年賺錢，期間也會學習，再寫下近年來發生的重要事情，再教年輕人知識，大部分時間會花在與其他斯特魯德布魯格人成為朋友。我們一起幫助消滅世界上的犯罪……

看著很理想，很圓滿，然而被生生的打臉了，感受一下：

I had only just finished describing the happiness of endless life， when I realized that my friend’s shoulders were shaking and tears of laughter were running down his face。

‘You see， you’ve made a very understandable mistake。

‘I really must explain，’ he said。

You suppose that if someone lives for ever， he is young， healthy， and strong for ever too。

And that doesn’t happen。 Our Struldbrugs have a terrible life。

After living for about eighty years， they become ill and miserable。

They have no friends and they can’t remember much of the past。

At that age the law considers them to be dead， so their children inherit their houses and money。

Then they sometimes have to beg to get enough food to eat。

They lose their teeth and hair， they forget the names of their families， and the only thing they want is to die。 But that’s impossible！’

大概翻譯是：
