一、加

“2+2=4”或者“712+145=857”該怎麼說呢？

在數目小的加法中，我們通常說and表示+，說is或者are來表示=。

Two and two are four。 2+2=4

Six and five is eleven。 6+5=11

在數目較大的加法中（以及在比較正式的文體中），我們用plus來表示+，用 equals或者is來表示=。

“7-4=3”或者“619-428=191”該怎麼說呢？

在會話體中，人們運算小的數目時，說 four from seven leaves/is three，或者說 seven take away four leaves/is three，在比較正

式的文體裡或者運算較大的數目時，則用 minus（讀［mains］）和 equals。

“3×4=12”或者“17×381=6477”該怎麼說？

在運算小的數目時，最常用的辦法是說 three fours， six sevens等等，並且用are來表示=。

Three fours are twelve。 3x4=12

Six sevens are forty-Iwo。6x7=42

在較大的運算裡，存在幾個可能的說法。一種辦法用 times表示x，用is或 makes來表示=。

Seventeen times three hundred and eighty-one is/ makes six thousand， four hundred and seventy-seven。 17x381=6477

在比較正式的文體中，我們說 multiplied by和 equals。

17 multiplied by 381 equals 6477。 17x381=6477

四、除

“9÷3=3”或者“261÷9=29”該怎麼說？

最簡單的辦法是用 divided by和 equals。

Two hundred and sixty-one divided by nine equals twenty-nine。261÷9=29

但是在較小的運算裡，人們可能比如這麼說 three into nine goes three（times）用3除9得3。
